Flexible pavement construction utilizes specialized asphalt layers engineered for specific mechanical loads. The Indonesian Bina Marga standard categorizes these as AC-WC, AC-BC, and AC-Base.
1. AC-WC (Asphalt Concrete - Wearing Course)
The top surface layer exposed directly to tire contact and weather. Ensures water tightness, smooth driving, and skid resistance (nominal 3-4 cm thickness).
2. AC-BC (Asphalt Concrete - Binder Course)
The intermediate binder layer engineered to absorb shear stress from heavy wheel loads before reaching subgrade layers (nominal 5-6 cm thickness).
3. AC-Base (Asphalt Concrete - Base)
The structural foundation asphalt layer with coarser aggregate gradation designed for heavy-traffic highways and industrial corridors (nominal 6-8 cm thickness).
